Why the Devils Cardigan Is Australia’s Toughest, New Gravel Race

A Devilishly Good Debut

On 10 May 2025, the Devils Cardigan made its debut in the UCI Gravel World Series, solidifying its place among the toughest and most scenic gravel races on the calendar. Held in Derby, Tasmania, the race attracted over 360 riders from across Australia, New Zealand and the UK to name a few.

The 106km course was as brutal as it was beautiful – 87% gravel, 2,300m of climbing, and three major climbs that left legs screaming and hearts full.

“This was a course built for the brave.”
— Giant Melbourne

Who Conquered It?

  • Men’s Winner: Brendan Johnston (Giant) – 3:24:00
  • Women’s Winner: Talia Appleton (Praties) – 4:03:00

In the men’s race, Johnston claimed victory over 2022 champion Tasman Nankervis, with Scott Bowden and Mark O’Brien in hot pursuit. On the women’s side, 19-year-old Appleton stunned the field, holding off seasoned pro Tiffany Cromwell, who still secured second despite a mid-race puncture. Holly Harris rounded out the podium.

“Big congrats to Talia Appleton on the win. Strong ride and was pushing me a lot when we were together.”
